split-notes Microtonal Netlabel

I started a record label in January 2010: split-notes. It's a digital-only label specialising in microtonal-with-a-beat, whatever that might mean. All releases are free to download and share.

The aim of the label is to promote music with the colourful intonations and harmony of microtonality, but which still has riffs and a good groove.

In the realms of microtonality, weird art-music rules the day. I am personally interested in weird stuff, however the aim of split-notes is nevertheless to appeal to those without an ear for the avant-garde. So far we've had a handful of releases featuring several different artists.

The overall plan is to release a bunch of new albums in various styles to awaken and inspire our growing audience. And perhaps this can all be a small step in cultivating a lively worldwide scene for microtones.

Micro-essay about microtonality for new hooks and chords

Microtonality = technique where you don't use the 12 notes of traditional Western music.

Many musicians I've had discussions with have never stopped to think "why are there 12 notes in music?" I'll reveal the short answer for you now - it's because it was handy for classical/folk musicians to use 12. It's much easier. So why use anything else? Because that great melody or chord sequence you can write in 12 has already been written way back in the 20th Century, back when the musical resources of those 12 notes were bled as dry as the desert sands.

So I guess my short point is that microtonality is an avenue to originality for the coming decades. You're more likely to be treading fresh ground. That's not to say that originality always means good or 12 means bad. Originality only means new and some people are looking for new. Such people might really enjoy microtonality as one possible passageway into fresh melodies and patterns. But ultimately everybody is into something different. I'm just into this stuff for some reason.
